Artturi Aleksanteri Lehkonen (born July 4, 1995 in Piikkiö ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League since May 2016 .

Career

Artturi Lehkonen was born into an ice hockey family in Piikkiö, so his father Ismo and his uncle Timo were both professional ice hockey players and later coaches themselves. In his youth Artturi Lehkonen played for the junior departments of Turun Palloseura , TPS for short, in the city of Turku, only a few kilometers from his home town . After he had scored 54 points in 40 games for the U20s of TPS Turku in the 2011/12 season , he made his debut a little later for the club's men's team in the SM-liiga , the highest Finnish league. There he played 18 games and recorded two goals and assists. He was then selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2012 in 57th position by the SKA Saint Petersburg .

In the run-up to the 2012/13 season, Lehkonen moved within the league to Kalevan Pallo (KalPa), for which he scored 30 points in 45 games in the following season and was subsequently named Rookie of the Year in the SM-liiga. He was also selected in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 55th place by the Canadiens de Montréal . After another year at KalPa, the attacker left his home and signed a two-year contract with Frölunda HC from Svenska Hockeyligan in March 2014 . In his second year in Sweden, Lehkonen won both the Swedish championship and the Champions Hockey League with Frölunda HC .

After this successful season, the Canadiens de Montréal equipped him with an entry contract in May 2016 . As part of the preparation, the Finn earned a place in the Canadiens' NHL squad and thus made his debut in the National Hockey League in October 2016 . In his first season he scored 18 goals and became the third-best goalscorer of his team (together with Alexander Radulow ).

International

Lehkonen represented his home country for the first time at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 , where the U17 Finland took seventh place, and at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , with the U18 losing to the Russian team in the third place match. A fourth place and a bronze medal at the U18 World Championships in 2012 and 2013 also followed at U18 level . For the Finnish U20 national team , Lehkonen took part in the U20 World Championships from 2013 to 2015 and became Junior World Champion in 2014 . The attacker made his debut in the senior national team at the Euro Hockey Tour 2015/16 .
