Charles "Charlie" Lindgren (born December 18, 1993 in Lakeville , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League since March 2016 and for their farm team, the Rocket de Laval , is used in the American Hockey League .
Career
Youth and college
Charlie Lindgren was born in Lakeville, where he played for the Lakeville North High ice hockey team in a regional high school league. For the 2011/12 season he moved to the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest-ranking junior league in the United States, and ran there from then on for the Sioux Falls Stampede . In his second year he rose there to the undisputed goalkeeper and ensured in the playoffs with a catch rate of 92.1% that the team reached the semi-finals; there, however, they were subject to the Fargo Force . Lindgren then enrolled at St. Cloud State University in the fall of 2013 and from then on guarded the gate for their huskies in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
As a freshman , the US-American acted as a substitute behind Ryan Faragher in the 2013/14 season , came to ten missions and an average goal conceded of 2.42, which finally earned him a call to the NCHC All-Rookie Team . At the beginning of his sophomore year, Lindgren also rose to become a regular goalkeeper with the St. Cloud State Huskies, but only had his breakthrough in the 2015/16 season. In this he led the team with a catch quota of 92.5% and an average of 2.13 against 30 wins and subsequently to the championship of the NCHC. He was also named Goalkeeper of the Year in the league and was appointed to the NCHC First All-Star Team .
NHL
With these achievements, Lindgren also drew the attention of the National Hockey League (NHL), so that he - without having previously been considered in an NHL Entry Draft - signed an entry contract with the Canadiens de Montréal in March 2016 . Just under a week later, he made his debut in the goal of the Canadiens and recorded his first NHL victory directly. As expected, he spent the following 2016/17 season mainly with the St. John's IceCaps in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Montréals farm team . There he prevailed against Yann Danis as the first goalkeeper and came to 48 missions with five shutouts during the season . In April 2016, the Canadiens called him again in their NHL squad, where he played two more games in a row and both played them victoriously.
Lindgren spent the beginning of the 2017/18 season with the Canadiens' new farm team, the Rocket de Laval , but returned to Montréal in early November 2017. The Canadiens had to complain about the injury-related failures of Carey Price and Al Montoya , so that Lindgren as the nominal third goalkeeper now got significantly more ice age in the NHL. A little later, the Canadiens also signed Antti Niemi , so Lindgren was sent back to the AHL after eight NHL appearances and Price's return.
At the 2018 World Cup , Lindgren took part in an international tournament for the first time and won the bronze medal there with the USA national team . Behind Keith Kinkaid and Scott Darling , however, he remained without commitment.
