Scott Darling (born December 22, 1988 in Lemont , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who was most recently under contract with HC Innsbruck from the Austrian ice hockey league .
Career
Darling began his career in the 2005/06 season and kept goal for the Chicago Young Americans and the North Iowa Outlaws . The following season he was on the ice for the Capital District Selects in the EJHL. He finished the season with the highest catch rate (92.4%) of all goalkeepers. In 2007 he was selected in both the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes in the sixth round at a total of 153rd position and in the USHL Entry Draft by the Indiana Ice in the fourth round at a total of 40th position. In the 2007/08 season he played in the United States Hockey League for the Indiana Ice and was able to reach the playoffs with the team. In the following two seasons he was in the can for the University of Maine .
Between 2010 and 2014 he was under contract for a total of ten different clubs in different leagues. He had more than 20 appearances in the 2010/11 season with the Louisiana IceGators , 2011/12 with the Mississippi RiverKings , 2012/13 with the Wheeling Nailers and 2013/14 with the Milwaukee Admirals .
At the beginning of 2014 Darling was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks and was initially mainly used by the Rockford IceHogs , the Blackhawks' farm team . He made his NHL debut in the 2-1 home win of the Blackhawks against the Ottawa Senators on October 26, 2014; the first shutout succeeded on March 18, 2015 at 1: 0 away win against the New York Rangers . At the end of the 2014/15 season, he won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks and then established himself in their NHL line-up.
After three years in Chicago, the Blackhawks gave him to the Carolina Hurricanes in April 2017 in exchange for a third-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . However, the Hurricanes only secured the negotiating rights to Darling for the time being, as his contract threatened to expire on July 1, 2017. Finally, in May 2017, he signed a new four-year contract with the Hurricanes and is now expected to receive an average annual salary of 4.15 million US dollars. In the 2018 World Cup the goalkeeper took also the first time in an international tournament and won there with the national team of the United States the bronze medal. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, however, Darling lost his regular place at the Hurricanes to Curtis McElhinney and Petr Mrázek , so that he was temporarily sent to the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL. Finally, his time in Carolina ended prematurely in June 2019 when he was handed over to the Florida Panthers with a six- round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . In return, goalkeeper colleague James Reimer switched to the Hurricanes. The Panthers in turn paid Darling for the two remaining years of his contract immediately (buy-out) , so that he was then looking for a new employer.
At the beginning of November 2019, the Austrian club HC Innsbruck announced Darling's engagement.
