Career

James Reimer began his career as a hockey player with the Red Deer Rebels , for which he was active from 2005 to 2008 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the fourth round as the 99th player of the Toronto Maple Leafs . In the 2008/09 season , the goalkeeper completed his first three missions for the Toronto Marlies , the farm team of the Maple Leafs, in the American Hockey League . However, he spent most of the season in the ECHL . There he started the season with the Reading Royals and finished it with the South Carolina Stingrays . In the latter, he was able to convince in the playoffs and led his team to win the Kelly Cup . As the best player in the playoffs, he also received the trophy as Kelly Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player . Already in the regular season, the Canadian was successful with the Stingrays with a goal against goal of 1.32 and a catch rate of 96.1 percent in his six appearances.

For the 2009/10 season, the Maple Leafs Reimer ordered their AHL farm team Toronto Marlies, for which he was regularly on the ice throughout the season. In his 26 appearances, with a catch rate of 92.5 percent, he only conceded 2.25 goals per game on average. After he started the 2010/11 season with the Marlies, he was accepted into the NHL squad of the Maple Leafs after good performance and made his debut in the National Hockey League on December 20, 2010 in the home game against the Atlanta Thrashers . From then on he formed the goalkeeping team at the Maple Leafs together with his compatriot Jean-Sébastien Giguère .

After almost eight years in the organization of the Maple Leafs, Reimer and Jeremy Morin were handed over to the San Jose Sharks in February 2016 . In return, the Maple Leafs received Ben Smith , goalkeeper Alex Stalock and a four-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , which becomes a third-round vote if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup final of the same year. Reimer reached the Stanley Cup final with the Sharks as the second goalkeeper behind Martin Jones , but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins there . Subsequently, Reimer received no new contract in San Jose and signed a five-year contract as a free agent with the Florida Panthers , which should bring him 3.4 million US dollars per year.

After three years, however, the Panthers handed him over to the Carolina Hurricanes in June 2019 and in return received goalkeeper Scott Darling and a six- round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
