Nino Niederreiter (born September 8, 1992 in Chur ) is a Swiss ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League since January 2019 . Previously, the left winger , who began his career in his home country with HC Davos , was active in the NHL with the New York Islanders , who selected him in fifth position in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , and Minnesota Wild . With the Swiss national team , he won the silver medal at the 2013 World Cup and 2018 World Cup .

Career

Niederreiter comes from the offspring of the EHC Chur , before he moved to the junior division of HC Davos in the summer of 2006 . Niederreiter was considered one of the greatest talents in Swiss ice hockey. So he was used in the 2008/09 season at the age of 16 in three playoff games of the eventual Swiss champions HC Davos and provided a template.

After he was selected in the 2009 CHL Import Draft in second overall position by the Portland Winterhawks from the Western Hockey League , he moved to North America in autumn 2009. In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , Niederreiter was selected in fifth overall position by the New York Islanders and was thus the most highly elected Swiss player in the history of the NHL Entry Draft until Nico Hischier ( 2017 ) . In September 2010 he signed a three-year contract with the New York Islanders. On October 13, 2010 he scored his first goal in the National Hockey League with the 1-0 lead against the Washington Capitals . Thus, at 18 years and 35 days, Niederreiter became the youngest Islanders scorer of all time. On October 28, 2010, the New York Islanders club management decided to send Niederreiter back to the Portland Winterhawks after nine games this season. In the 2010/11 season he played in Portland together with his compatriot Sven Bärtschi and reached the final games of the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the team , in which the Winterhawks were defeated in five games by the Kootenay Ice .

Before the 2011/12 season, Niederreiter received a regular place in the Islanders' NHL squad, but injured himself in a preparatory game. After recovery, he was initially used in five games in the American Hockey League before he played his first NHL game of the season in mid-November. Finally, the young Swiss was transferred back to the AHL, where he completed the entire 2012/13 season as a regular player. In late June 2013, the attacker was transferred to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Cal Clutterbuck and a third-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . There he finally managed to establish himself in the NHL. Niederreiter scored his first goal for Minnesota on October 12, 2013, in a 5-1 home win over the Dallas Stars. At the end of the regular season, Niederreiter had 36 scorer points. The Minnesota Wild qualified for the playoffs, where they lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round after games. In 13 playoff games, the Chur driver contributed three goals and three assists.

In the course of the following three years the confederate steadily increased in his point yield. After his record year with 57 points at the end of the 2016/17 season , Niederreiten signed a new five-year contract in Minnesota in July 2017, which should earn him an average annual salary of 5.25 million US dollars. At the time it was signed, it was the best-value contract of a Swiss ice hockey player. However, he did not fulfill the contract with the Wild, as he was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes in January 2019 in exchange for Victor Rask .

International

Internationally, Niederreiter played for Switzerland at the U18 Junior World Championships in 2008 and 2009 . In addition, at the age of 17, he surprisingly led his home country to the semi -finals of the 2010 U20 Junior World Cup . With the U20 selection of Switzerland he reached fourth place and was appointed to the all-star team of the tournament.

In spring 2010 Niederreiter was called up for the men's national team, for which he played a game at the 2010 World Cup . At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the silver medal with it. He repeated this success at the 2018 World Cup .

He also represented the Europe team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he finished second with the team.
