Douglas Jonathan "Dougie" Hamilton junior (born June 17, 1993 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since June 2018 . The defender was previously active in the NHL for the Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames .
Career
After his time with the St. Catharines Falcons, Hamilton, who grew up in St. Catharines , was selected 27th by the Niagara IceDogs in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection . In his first year with the IceDogs in the Ontario Hockey League , he was named to the second all-rookie team. In the 2010/11 season , in which he reached the Eastern Conference final with his team, he was the best defender of his team and fourth best defender of the OHL with 58 points. Hamilton was then awarded the Bobby Smith Trophy and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award in 2011 .
In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Hamilton was selected ninth by the Boston Bruins . In December 2011 he signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Bruins. In January 2013 he made his NHL debut in a 3-1 win against the New York Rangers and was still on the ice in 49 games for Boston by the end of the season.
In the run-up to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , Hamilton was handed over to the Calgary Flames by the Boston Bruins . In return, the Bruins received a first-round and two second-round voting rights for this draft. He was active in Calgary for three years before he was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes with Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox in June 2018 , who sent Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm to the Flames for this.

family
Hamilton's older brother Freddie is also a professional ice hockey player. His father Doug was a successful rower , who at the 1984 Summer Olympics the bronze medal in quadruple sculls won and also at the 1988 Summer Olympics participated. His mother, Lynn Polson , was a member of the Canadian women's basketball team at the 1984 Summer Games , which finished the tournament in fourth place.
