Sami Vatanen (born June 3, 1991 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since February 2020 . The defender was previously active in the NHL for the Anaheim Ducks and the New Jersey Devils .
Career
Sami Vatanen started his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of JYP Jyväskylä . During the NHL Entry Draft 2009 he was selected in the fourth round as a total of 106th player by the Anaheim Ducks . In the 2009/10 season , the defender made his debut for the JYP professional team, for whom he scored ten goals and provided 27 assists in a total of 69 games in his rookie year . He was then selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2010 by Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the first round as the second player overall. Again he initially stayed with his hometown club, where he was able to convince in the 2010/11 season . He received the Pekka Rautakallio trophy as the best defender in the league and the Matti Keinonen trophy as the player with the best plus / minus balance. In addition, he was elected to the all-star team of the SM-liiga and was named Player of the Month for November. In May 2011 he signed a three-year entry contract with the Anaheim Ducks from the National Hockey League , but then also spent the 2011/12 season in his Finnish home with JYP Jyväskylä.
In addition to playing at JYP, the right-handed shooter was also on the ice for the Finnish U20 national team in the Mestis , the second Finnish division, from 2008 to 2011 . In the Mestis he also ran in five games for the D team , the farm team of JYP, in the 2008/09 season .
Due to the NHL - Lockouts in the 2012/13 season , the Finn initially debuted for their farm team , the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League . In his first use on October 12, 2012 in the home game against the Worcester Sharks , which ended with a 4-2 win for Norfolk, Vatanen posted an assist. He made his debut in the NHL on February 1, 2013 and scored his first goal in the NHL against Columbus on April 17. He finished the AHL season as the second best scorer for the Norfolk Admirals.
With the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Vatanen established himself in the NHL squad of the Ducks. In June 2016, the Finn signed a new four-year contract in Anaheim, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.875 million. However, the Ducks handed him over to the New Jersey Devils in November 2017 and in return received Adam Henrique , Joseph Blandisi and a third-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In addition, a third-round suffrage moves back to New Jersey, provided Henrique signs a new contract in Anaheim.
Vatanen was active in New Jersey for almost two and a half years before it was handed over to the Carolina Hurricanes for the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, the Devils received Janne Kuokkanen , Fredrik Claesson and a conditional four-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . Whether the right to vote changes hands at all or even improves to one for the third round depends on the number of games played by the injured Vatanen at the time of the transfer until the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs 2020 . In addition, the Devils continued to take 50% of the Finn's salary.
International
For Finland , Vatanen took part in the junior division in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2008 and 2009 and in the U20 Junior World Championships in 2010 and 2011 . At the U18 World Cup in 2009 he won the bronze medal with his team and at the U20 World Cup in 2011 he was named one of the three best players on his team.
In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 2010 World Cup and the 2010 and 2011 Euro Hockey Tour . At the 2014 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team. He also represented his home country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
