Joel Edmundson (born June 28, 1993 in Brandon , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since September 2019 . Previously, he had spent six years in the organization of the St. Louis Blues and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 2019 playoffs .
Career
Joel Edmundson was born in Brandon and in his youth went through the junior teams of the Brandon Wheat Kings based there . In the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) he was selected in 2008 by the Moose Jaw Warriors in 121st position, but did not change until the 2010/11 season and thus relatively late in their organization. In his rookie season, the defender came up with 20 points scorer in 71 games for the Warriors and was selected in the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2011 in 46th position by the St. Louis Blues . For the time being, however, the Canadian remained in the WHL and completed another one and a half seasons for the Warriors before he was transferred to the Kamloops Blazers in December 2012 in a multi-player and draft-option exchange deal within the league . In Kamloops he finished the 2012/13 season before he was equipped with an entry contract by the St. Louis Blues .
The Blues used Edmundson for the time being with the Chicago Wolves , their farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL). The Canadian spent two full seasons there before establishing himself in the Blues squad in preparation for the 2015/16 season and making his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a little later . During the season he was only sent briefly to the AHL once and by the end of the season he had 67 NHL games for the Blues. In the summer of 2016, his expiring contract in St. Louis was extended by two years.
With the Blues, Edmundson won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . In the following off-season , however, in September 2019, together with Dominik Bokk and a seventh-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021, he was given to the Carolina Hurricanes , who in turn gave Justin Faulk and a five-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2020 to the incumbent Stanley- Cup winners transferred.
International
Edmundson made his debut for the senior national team at the 2018 World Cup , where he finished fourth with the team.
