Sebastian Antero Aho (born July 26, 1997 in Rauma ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL) since June 2016 and plays there on the position of the center . With the Finnish U20 national team , he became world champion in this age group in 2016 .
Career
Sebastian Aho has played for Oulun Kärpät since the beginning of his career . At the club from the northernmost city in the European Union, he first went through all junior classes. In 2014 he received the Yrjö Hakala Award as Rookie of the Year of the A-Junior Liiga and was also elected to the Second All-Star Team. On February 14, 2014, at the age of 16, he played for the first time against Porin Ässät in the men's team of Kärpät in the Liiga , Finland's top division, and was then 62 in the KHL Junior Draft by Severstal Tscherepowez in the second round . Player selected. In the following year he was used in 37 games (27 in the main round and ten in the playoffs) of the Liiga and won the Finnish championship with his team . In the NHL Entry Draft 2015 he was drawn in the second round as the 35th player by the Carolina Hurricanes , but remained - as after the KHL Draft the year before - with his home club. In 2016 he achieved the best plus / minus balance of the main Liiga round and was awarded the Matti Keinonen Trophy for this.
In June 2016, the Carolina Hurricanes provided him with an entry-level contract . In his first NHL season, Aho got 49 points, completing all 82 games, placing him fifth on the rookie scorer list . In the following year he increased his offensive statistics significantly to 65 points and thus became the best scorer on his team. He achieved the same in the following year 2018/19, with 83 scorer points from 82 games reaching 1.0 points per game for the first time. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs 2019 he reached the conference finals with the Hurricanes and also led their scorer list in the post-season . He was also called up for the 2019 NHL All-Star Game .
The Finn's contract then expired, so that he was granted the status of a restricted free agent in July 2019 . This resulted in the rare event that Aho actually received an offer sheet , when the Canadiens de Montréal offered him a five-year contract with a total salary of $ 42.27 million. Carolina decided, however, to catch up with this offer, so that he was bound to the Hurricanes with immediate effect on these terms.
International
Internationally, Aho first appeared at the 2013 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Brașov , Romania , which he won with the Finnish U17 selection. He then took part in the U18 World Championships in 2014 and 2015 , winning the silver medal with the Finnish team in 2015. With the Finnish U20 team , he took part in the 2015 and 2016 World Championships in this age group and became world champion in 2016, to which he made a significant contribution as the second best scorer and goal setter.
He made his debut in the Finnish men's national team at the Euro Hockey Tour 2015/16 and won the silver medal at the 2016 World Cup with it . He also played for Finland at the 2017 and 2018 World Championships , leading the 2018 tournament in goals (9) and being named the best striker and elected to the All-Star team. He also represented his home country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
