Warren Foegele (born April 1, 1996 in Markham , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League since March 2017 and plays for them in the position of left winger .
Career
Foegele first played as a teenager in the vicinity of his native Markham in the province of Ontario . In the summer of 2012, the winger then moved to St. Andrew's College in Aurora . In parallel to his training at the private school, he played the following two years for the ice hockey team of his school in the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association (CISAA). With the school Foegele celebrated several championships before he was selected in the summer of 2014 in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 in the third round in 67th place by the Carolina Hurricanes from the National Hockey League . He was also drawn in the same summer by the junior leagues Ontario Hockey League and United States Hockey League in their drafts by teams. He then moved to the United States and initially continued his education at the University of New Hampshire . There he had initially announced that he would be in the summer of 2015 and wanted to spend the 2014/15 game year in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Penticton Vees . As before, he played at UNH for his instructor's ice hockey program - in this case Hockey East , a division in the gaming operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
After the attacker had collected 16 scorer points in 34 missions there in the first year , he broke off his training at short notice at the end of October 2015 and immediately switched to the Kingston Frontenacs in the Ontario Hockey League. Foegele spent one and a half seasons in his Canadian homeland before being transferred to league rivals Erie Otters in January 2017 . With the Otters, the striker won the OHL championship in the form of the J. Ross Robertson Cup at the end of the season . Although Foegele was only the fifth best scorer within the team with 26 playoff points behind Alex DeBrincat , Dylan Strome , Anthony Cirelli and Taylor Raddysh , he received the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the most valuable player in the playoffs.
For the 2017/18 season , the now 21-year-old switched to the professional field after signing a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2017. Foegele was first used in the Carolinas organization with their farm team , the Charlotte Checkers , from the American Hockey League . After collecting 46 points in 73 games there, he was appointed to the Hurricanes' NHL squad for the first time at the end of the season, where he finally made his debut. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season he was given a regular place in the squad.
