Andrei Igorewitsch Swetschnikow ( Russian Андрей Игоревич Свечников , English transcription: Andrei or Andrey Igorevich Svechnikov ; born March 26, 2000 in Barnaul ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since July 2018 . The right winger was selected in second place by the Hurricanes in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft .

Career

Andrei Swetschnikow was born in Barnaul, Siberia , and moved with his family first to Moscow and later to Kazan , where he played in his youth for the youth department of Ak Bars Kazan . For the 2016/17 season, the winger moved to the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States. In Muskegon he lived with his mother and at the same time close to his brother Yevgeny , who was running for the Grand Rapids Griffins at that time . For the Lumberjacks, the Russian scored 58 points in 48 games in his first season on North American ice and was consequently elected to the USHL First All-Star Team and the USHL All-Rookie Team , as well as being named Rookie of the Year in the league.

For the following season 2017/18 Svetschnikow moved to the Barrie Colts in the Canadian Ontario Hockey League (OHL), which had selected him in the previous CHL Import Draft in first overall position. The attacker also established himself as a regular scorer in Barrie, scoring 40 goals with 72 points in 44 games and at the end of the season was again honored as best rookie with the Emms Family Award . In addition, he was elected to the OHL First All-Rookie Team .

Svetschnikow was considered to be one of the outstanding talents for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2018 , so the Central Scouting Service rated him as the number one North American field player, while he was honored by the Canadian Hockey League with the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award . Overall, he was traded behind Rasmus Dahlin as a likely overall runner-up in the draft, in which position he was subsequently selected by the Carolina Hurricanes . A little later, at the end of June 2018, he signed an entry-level contract with the Hurricanes. He subsequently made his debut in the NHL in early October 2018.

International

At the international level, Svetschnikow represented his home country in a large number of tournaments. At U17 level, he won a silver and a bronze medal at the World U-17 Challenges in 2015 and 2016 , where he was elected top scorer and the all-star team of the tournament in his second year. He also took part in the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games , where he won the bronze medal, as he did a little later at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2016 . In addition, the winger was part of the Russian U18 selection, which achieved sixth place at the U18 World Championships in 2016 and 2017 and another bronze medal the following year. He made his debut for the Russian U20 national team as part of the U20 World Cup in 2018 , where he finished fifth with the team.
