Petr Mrázek (born February 14, 1992 in Ostrava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since July 2018 . Before that, he spent over five years in the Detroit Red Wings organization .
Career
Mrázek played for HC Vítkovice Steel during his youth . For the club he played in the U18 and U20 teams, among others. In the 2007/08 season he made his debut in the Extraliga . With the two junior teams, he won the Czech championship in both age groups in 2009. In addition, in 2008 and 2009 he had the best catch quota of all goalkeepers in the U18 extra league and in 2009 also the lowest number of goals against . In the summer of 2009 he was then selected in the first round in the first round of the Ottawa 67’s from the Ontario Hockey League in 30th place in the 2009 CHL Import Draft .
The Czech then moved to North America, over which a dispute arose between his training club from Vítkovice and the Czech ice hockey association . The goalkeeper remained unimpressed and played a good rookie season with the 67's , after which he was awarded the FW “Dinty” Moore Trophy for the lowest goal score among all new goalkeepers. In addition, he was appointed to the second all-rookie team of the league and was elected in the KHL Junior Draft 2010 by HK Budiwelnik Kiev in the seventh round in 188th place. In addition, he was also drawn in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 141st place by the Detroit Red Wings . In his second OHL season, in which he received significantly more missions, he was elected to the Third All-Star team. After leaving the OHL play-offs , Mrázek was signed by the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League , the Red Wings farm team , on an amateur basis for the remainder of the season.
In the course of the following seasons Mrázek received more and more playing time in the NHL, until he finally established himself as the goalkeeper of the Red Wings in the 2015/16 season, displacing Jimmy Howard . After almost five and a half years in the organization of the Red Wings, the Czech was handed over to the Philadelphia Flyers in February 2018 , which reacted to the injuries of Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth . In return, Detroit received at least one four-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , which could be upgraded to a second-round vote, depending on how the Flyers fare in the playoffs and how many games Mrázek wins. In addition, another third-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft should go to Detroit if the goalkeeper signs a new contract in Philadelphia after the 2017/18 season. This subsequently did not materialize, as Mrázek joined the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent in July 2018 .
International
Mrázek represented his home country, the Czech Republic, at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2009 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2012 . At the U18 Junior World Cup in 2009, which the Czechs finished in sixth place, Mrázek was behind Filip Novotný and Marek Mazanec only as the third goalkeeper in the squad and remained without appearances. He only sat on the bench in two of the six games. Further appearances at junior world championships were initially prevented because there had been a dispute between his training club and the Czech ice hockey association about the move to North America without compensation. It was not until three years later that he was the regular goalkeeper of the Czechs at the 2012 U20 World Junior Championship and his performances led the team to the final round. There the team finished fifth in the end. The goalkeeper was named the competition's best goalkeeper and was named to the tournament's All-Star Team.
In the senior sector, Mrázek made his debut at the 2012 World Cup , but only had nine minutes of playing time. He was reappointed to the senior national team for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and 2017 World Cup .
