James Russell "Jimmy" Howard III. (Born March 26, 1984 in Ogdensburg , New York ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since 2005 .
Career
Jimmy Howard began his career in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program for players under the age of 18 and was U18 world champion with the US team , before moving to the University of Maine in 2002 , where he worked for their team in Hockey East , a division of National Collegiate Athletic Association , played. After his first season he was voted the best rookie of Hockey East and selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft at position 64.
In the 2003/04 season, the University of Maine was able to win the championship of Hockey East and thus qualify for the NCAA tournament, in which the best college teams fight for the US championship. They made it to the finals of the tournament, but only just lost 0-1. Howard received several awards after the season, including as the goalkeeper with the lowest average goal conceded in the Hockey East and as the MVP of the Hockey East Playoffs . He was able to set new records in the Hockey East Association in the season with a goal average of 1.19 and a catch rate of 95.3 percent.
After another year in the college league, he left the University of Maine and received a three-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the fall of 2005, but played mainly with the Red Wings farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL . On November 28, 2005 he got his first chance in the NHL and convinced because he was able to parry 22 of the 24 shots of the Los Angeles Kings . This was followed by three more appearances for Detroit in the NHL in the next two weeks, but then he played again in the AHL, where he won 27 of his 38 games and was elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team at the end of the season .
At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he did not make the jump into the NHL squad and spent the year in Grand Rapids, where he shared the missions with Stefan Liv . In the regular season he could not build on the performance of the previous season, but convinced despite the first round defeat in the playoffs.
Howard showed very good performances in the Detroit Red Wings training camp in September 2007, but had to stay with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, where he shared the goalkeeping position with Adam Berkhoel . The Griffins played the weakest season since their league membership and Howard also showed weaknesses. In February 2008, however, he was used for the Red Wings in the NHL four times, as regular goalkeeper Dominik Hašek was injured. In the playoffs he returned to the Red Wings squad when they won the Stanley Cup , but Howard was not used as the third goalkeeper behind Chris Osgood and Hašek.
In preparation for the 2008/09 season , Howard tried again to qualify for a place in the NHL squad, but could not prevail against Chris Osgood and Ty Conklin . Instead, he formed the goalkeeping team at the Griffins with the young Swede Daniel Larsson . Howard started the season as a regular goalkeeper, but after Larsson showed better performance, she split the operating times. Howard showed weaknesses in the first two months and could not fully meet expectations, but he improved significantly over the course of the season and was voted AHL Player of the Week in late January 2009. In February he played a game in the NHL, but returned to the farm team, where he set a new franchise record with his 89th career win in the Griffins jersey on March 27 .
At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Howard established himself as the goalkeeper of the Red Wings and only gave up this position briefly in the 2016/17 season to Petr Mrázek .
