His greatest career success as a player but celebrated Houda services in the Rochester Americans by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League in 1996. As an assistant coach he won with the Boston Bruins in 2011 the Stanley Cup . Since summer 2016 he has been working as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.
Career
Doug Houda began his career as a hockey player with the Calgary Wranglers , where he was active from 1982 to 1985 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . During the NHL Entry Draft 1984 he was selected in the second round in 28th position by the Detroit Red Wings . After the defender had played a year with the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Adirondack Red Wings - the farm team at the time in the American Hockey League of the Detroit Red Wings - he was accepted into the professional squad of the Red Wings in the 1988/89 season . He played 57 games in the National Hockey League , in which he scored 13 points. In the following season, Doug Houda received more ice time and completed 73 NHL games, in which he scored eleven points scorer. In the 1990/91 season , after a few games, he was first assigned to the farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings, and handed over to the Hartford Whalers in the same season . There he played the majority of the games and was part of the permanent staff.
In 1994 Houda was given to the Los Angeles Kings , where he played 54 games and was able to collect eight scorer points. After just under a year in Los Angeles, the Kings management sent the defender to the Buffalo Sabers . With the Sabers he could not prevail and after two years he moved to the New York Islanders . After he completed 70 NHL games there in the first season, he received less Ice Age the following year and Houda was transferred to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . Since he lacked consistency, he was swapped between teams several times in the following years. Neither the Detroit Red Wings nor the Buffalo Sabers did he find his shape again. Therefore, Houda played in the last years of his career from 1999 to 2003 mostly with the Rochester Americans in the AHL, where he was one of the best players on the team and showed consistent performances. After the end of the 2002/03 season, he ended his active career.
From 2004 to 2006 Houda worked for his ex-club, the Rochester Americans, in the American Hockey League as an assistant coach. He then worked in the same position for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League from 2006 and 2016 . Since then he has been employed as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.
