Justin Joseph Abdelkader (born February 25, 1987 in Muskegon , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey striker who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since 2008 and plays for them on the position of the center .
Career
Justin Abdelkader began his career with the team at Mona Shores High School , for which he scored 37 goals in 28 games in 2003/04 and prepared another 43. He then received the Mr. Hockey Award for Best High School Player in the State of Michigan . In the summer of 2004 he moved to the US Junior League , USHL , where he played for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders . He collected a total of 52 points in 60 league games in the 2004/05 season and was eighth on the top scorer list with 27 goals. In the playoffs , his performance decreased and remained without a goal. Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate winning the Clark Cup , the US junior championship, with the RoughRiders .
Shortly thereafter, Abdelkader was selected in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round at position 42. But he first went to Michigan State University in the fall and played for their ice hockey team, the Michigan State Spartans. With ten goals and twelve assists , he had a solid debut season, but was promoted to a leading player in the team in his second year. The Spartans were able to move into the Frozen Four final series of the NCAA , where they were able to win the American college championship in the final with the winning goal by Abdelkader 18 seconds before the end. Abdelkader was then named the best player of the final tournament. In addition, he joined the US U20 national team in January 2007 at the Junior World Championship , where they won the bronze medal.
In his third year at Michigan State University he was alternate captain of the Spartans and finished second in the team's internal scorer list with 40 points in the 2007/08 season. At the end of the season, he was named the best defensive striker by the CCHA and also received the Mike and Marian Ilitch Humanitarian Award for his charitable work .
Just a few weeks later, he received a trial contract with the Detroit Red Wings for an NHL game, which he completed on April 3, 2008, before signing a three-year contract the next day. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season , Abdelkader was sent to the Grand Rapids Griffins , the Detroit farm team , in the AHL , where he should gain further experience. In Grand Rapids he performed well on the offensive, but above all his physical and defensive game was convincing, which is why he was appointed to the NHL for two appearances and was elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team at the end of the season . In the playoffs he scored six times within six games in the first round, but remained unsuccessful in the following series against the Manitoba Moose . After the Griffins were eliminated, Abdelkader was brought to the Detroit Red Wings, where he took the place of the injured Tomáš Kopecký in the regular squad.
As a result, Abdelkader established himself in the Red Wings squad and signed a new four-year contract in September 2012, which was prematurely extended for a further seven years in November 2015. He also represented Team USA at the 2012 and 2014 World Championships and at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
Justin Abdelkader is considered a talented two-way striker who has a well-trained physical game but has weaknesses on the offensive.
