Darren Helm (born January 21, 1987 in St. Andrews , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since 2007 . With the Red Wings, the attacker won the Stanley Cup in 2008 . Due to his speed and good defensive work, he is particularly considered a specialist in outnumbered situations .
Career
Darren Helm began his career in 2003 in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League , where he led the Selkirk Steelers' second team with 71 points in 34 games. For the 2004/05 season he moved to the high-class junior league WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers and had a solid first year with ten goals and 14 assists , after him, the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Entry Draft in 2005 selected in the fifth round at position 132nd
In the 2005/06 season , Helm was able to improve significantly and, as the best scorer with 79 points in 70 games, led the Hat Tigers to first place in the WHL during the regular season . Helm also took eighth place in the scorer ranking and was the fifth best goalscorer in the league. In the playoffs , the team was able to move into the conference finals, but Helms point yield decreased during the finals and they were eliminated against the Moose Jaw Warriors .
In September 2006, Helm signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, but stayed with the Medicine Hat Tigers for the time being, where he appeared as an alternate captain. In December he was named to the squad of the Canadian U20 national team and won the gold medal at the Junior World Championship the following month . In the WHL he was missing eleven games, which is why he could not build on the performance of the previous season, but the team was still the second best team after the regular season. In the playoffs he was next to goalkeeper Matt Keetley , who was named MVP of the finals, the best player of the team and led it with ten goals and twelve assists to win the President's Cup . In the Memorial Cup final round, in which the best team of the three major junior leagues is played, the Medicine Hat Tigers took first place after the group stage and thus moved directly into the final, where they met the Vancouver Giants . Although Helm had meanwhile scored 1-1 in the final, they lost the game in the end with 1-3. Darren Helm was elected to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team after the tournament ended.
In the fall of 2007, Helm moved to the seniors and played for the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings, in the AHL and had a good debut season with 16 goals and 15 assists. After he had completed his best game for the Griffins in March 2008 with two goals and two assists and three Red Wings strikers were out due to injury shortly thereafter, he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time and played a total of seven games. Although he was unable to score in the time, he impressed with his defensive game through his appearances in the third and fourth row of attacks. For the playoffs he was called back to the squad of the Red Wings and replaced Mark Hartigan as the center of the fourth attack row from the fifth game of the first round series against the Nashville Predators . Helm established himself in the course of the playoffs as a regular force, scored two goals and prepared two hits, one each goal and assist in the final series against the Pittsburgh Penguins when they won the Stanley Cup .
Helm also showed convincing performances in the Red Wings training camp in autumn 2008, but could not recommend himself for a place in the NHL squad due to the large number of strikers and began the 2008/09 season at the Grand Rapids Griffins. He used the time in the AHL and showed that he had improved especially on the offensive and was one of the team's best strikers before he was called up to the NHL in February 2009 and for most of the month for the Red Wings came. In early March, he returned to the Griffins in the AHL, where he finished the regular season. At the beginning of the playoffs he was back in the regular team in Detroit and established himself there over the course of the following years.
