Jonathan Bernier (born August 7, 1988 in Laval , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since July 2018 . He was previously active in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings , Toronto Maple Leafs , Anaheim Ducks and Colorado Avalanche , winning the Stanley Cup with the Kings in the 2012 playoffs .
Career
Jonathan Bernier began his career in 2004 with the Lewiston MAINEiacs from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . There he was the back-up goalkeeper behind Jaroslav Halák in his first season and made a total of 23 appearances. In his second year he took the position of the goalkeeper and recorded a total of 27 wins.
After the end of the season he came in April 2006 at the U18 World Championship for Team Canada . Bernier played all games for the team and posted a good average of 1.71 goals against a catch rate of 94.3 percent. However, Canada failed in the semi-finals to Finland and had to be content with fourth place after another defeat in the game for the bronze medal.
Two months later, Bernier was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round in eleventh place, a little later agreed with the Kings on a three-year contract, but initially stayed in the QMJHL with the MAINEiacs.
In December 2006 he was invited to the training camp of the Canadian U20 selection for the Junior World Championship , but could not prevail against Leland Irving and Carey Price . Instead, he continued to perform well in the QMJHL and at the end of the season had the second best conceded goal in the league. In the playoffs he was the main support of his team when they won the Coupe du Président and he himself was awarded the Trophée Guy Lafleur as the most valuable player in the playoffs. By winning the championship, the MAINEiacs were allowed to take part in the final round of the Memorial Cup , but were the first of the four teams to fail.
In August 2007, Bernier competed with a Canadian U20 selection in the eight-game Super Series against Russia . Canada won seven games and Bernier conceded only three goals in three games and was the only goalkeeper to manage a shutout .
In September 2007, Jonathan Bernier took part in the training camp of the Los Angeles Kings, where he recommended himself for a place in the NHL squad and he was able to oust Dan Cloutier . He had his first use at the NHL season opener on September 29 in London against defending champion Anaheim Ducks and celebrated his first victory. In his subsequent missions he showed weaknesses and was sent back to the Lewiston MAINEiacs in the QMJHL. There he was unable to match the performance of the previous year with the team, but still played a good season himself. In the playoffs they were eliminated in the first round. Bernier was then appointed to the squad of the Manchester Monarchs , the farm team of the Los Angeles Kings from the American Hockey League , and played the last season games with the team.
From the 2008/09 season he was an integral part of the Manchester Monarchs and shared the operating times with Jonathan Quick . From 2010 he was a permanent member of the Kings NHL squad. During the 2012 NHL lockout, Bernier switched to the Heilbronner Falken after Kevin Nastiuk and Domenic Bartels were injured.
On June 23, 2013, Bernier was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Ben Scrivens , Matt Frattin , and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2014 or 2015 . There the goalkeeper advanced to the Canadians' regular goalkeeper for the next three seasons and formed a duo with James Reimer . After the engagement of Frederik Andersen in June 2016, the Leafs gave Bernier a few weeks later for a right to vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to the Anaheim Ducks . He spent a season there before joining the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent in July 2017 . He then moved to the Detroit Red Wings in the same way in July 2018 , receiving a three-year contract in Motor City .
