Brendan Perlini (born April 27, 1996 in Guildford , England ) is a British - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since October 2019 and plays for them in the position of the left winger .
Career
Brendan Perlini grew up in a hockey family. His father, Fred Perlini , played eight games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League . However, he spent most of his career in England , so Brendan was born in Guildford , where his father was currently active for the Guildford Flames . His brother Brett is also an ice hockey player, was drafted 192nd by the Anaheim Ducks in 2010 and is currently under contract with the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League . Unlike Brendan, Brett plays internationally for Great Britain .
Brendan Perlini began playing ice hockey in England and moved back to Canada with his family at the age of eleven , to the hometown of his father, Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario . In the junior division he only played in Sault Ste. Marie before moving to Belle Tire in Detroit in 2010 . There he spent two years, scored 79 points scorer in 71 games and was then selected in the OHL Priority Selection 2012 by the Barrie Colts in 16th position. Thus, Perlini played from the 2012/13 season in the Ontario Hockey League , one of the top three junior leagues in Canada. After only half a year, the Colts gave him to the league competitor Niagara IceDogs .
In the following year and a half at the IceDogs, Perlini got 81 points in 85 games, so that he moved into the focus of the U18 national team, took part with it in the U18 Junior World Championship in 2014 and won the bronze medal there. In the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2014 , Perlini is seen as one of the most promising talents, with Central Scouting Services ranking him eighth in the list of outfield players in North America. In the course of this, he also took part in the 2014 CHL Top Prospects Game . In the subsequent Entry Draft, the Arizona Coyotes selected him in 12th position and took him directly under contract in July 2014, where he is initially still active for the IceDogs. At the end of the 2014/15 season, Perlini made his professional debut when he completed four playoff games for the Portland Pirates , the farm team of the Coyotes from the American Hockey League (AHL).
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , however, he returned to the OHL for the time being and took part in the U20 Junior World Championship , where he finished sixth with the team. After the end of the season, Perlini left the OHL for reasons of age and joined the AHL for the newly founded Coyotes farm team, the Tucson Roadrunners , at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . In early December, the attacker also made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Coyotes, where he established himself over the course of the season and scored 21 points in 57 games. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season , the British-born's performance stagnated. After only six points from the first 22 games of the season, he was handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks in November 2018 together with Dylan Strome . As compensation, Nick Schmaltz switched to the Coyotes.
Perlini was active in Chicago for almost a year before he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings in October 2019 . In return, the Blackhawks received the young defender Alec Regula .
