Frans Nielsen (born April 24, 1984 in Herning ) is a Danish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since July 2016 . Before that, he spent ten years with the New York Islanders .
Career
Frans Nielsen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of the Herning Blue Fox , with whom he was Danish champion straight away in his first professional game in the 2000/01 season . The attacker made a significant contribution to winning the title with 37 scorer points, including 18 goals, in 38 games and was named Rookie of the Year at AL-Bank Ligaen . Then Nielsen signed a contract with the Malmö Redhawks in the summer of 2001 , for which he played the following four years in the Swedish Elitserien . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2002 in the third round as a total of 87th player by the New York Islanders . First, however, he continued to play in Sweden for the Redhawks and in the 2005/06 season for Timrå IK .
In the 2006/07 season Nielsen made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Islanders, but played most of the season for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers . While he also played mainly for Bridgeport in the AHL in his second year in North America, he has been exclusively for the New York Islanders in the NHL since the 2008/09 season and was one of the team's top scorers. In the 2010/11 season he was assistant captain with the Islanders for the first time. He spent the lockout with Rauman Lukko in Finland.
After ten years with the Islanders, he did not get a new contract in New York after the 2015/16 season. As a result, he signed a six-year contract as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings in July 2016 , which should bring him an annual salary of 5.25 million US dollars.
International
For Denmark , Nielsen took part in the junior division in the U18 Junior B World Championships in 2000 , 2001 and 2002 as well as the U20 Junior C World Championships in 2001 and 2002 and the U20 Junior B World Championships in 2003 and 2004 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the B World Cup in 2002 and the A World Cup in 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2010 , 2012 and 2018 . At the 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2018 World Championships, he was the assistant captain of his team.
He also represented the Europe team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he finished second with the team.
