history

The first game took place on February 12, 1949 in Stockholm against the Canadian national ice hockey team . The Canadians won the game 47-0. This was also the greatest defeat for the Danes. They achieved their highest victory so far on March 18, 1977 in Copenhagen, where the Belgian national ice hockey team lost 27: 4.

The Danish national team in a friendly against Germany in April 2009

For a long time, Danish ice hockey played no special role internationally. The only A-World Cup participation was the tournament in Sweden, from which the mentioned 0:47 disgrace came. This only changed at the turn of the millennium. An extensive youth program of the Danish Ice Hockey Federation seemed to bear fruit as early as 1999, when they came first at the B World Cup in their own country (in Odense and Rødovre); however, in the relegation held afterwards (and for the last time that year), the teams from Italy, France and Norway had to go first and thus could not qualify for the upcoming A-World Cup in Saint Petersburg. In preparation for the annual world championships, the national team regularly took part in tournaments of the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge .

It was not until 2002 , at the Division I tournament in Hungary, that the Danes finally made direct promotion and have been in the A group since then. Already in the first year they caused a tangible surprise when they defeated the USA 5-2 in the opening game and sent them into the relegation round, while they reached the intermediate round and finished with an eleventh place, which is remarkable for a promoted team (including after a Draw against eventual world champions Canada ).

At the 2010 World Cup, the Danes surprisingly qualified for the quarter-finals, in which they lost 4-2 to their Scandinavian neighbor from Sweden . Eighth place at the World Cup also meant the best World Cup placement for the Danish national team.
