The Kyrgyz national ice hockey team represents the country of Kyrgyzstan in ice hockey at international competitions.

history

As early as 1962, a Kyrgyz selection played an international match. Against the selection of Lithuania there was a 7-2 defeat on March 11, 1962 as part of the Spartakiad in Sverdlovsk . However, both teams were not official national teams as both Soviet republics were represented by the Soviet national ice hockey team.

The Kyrgyz national ice hockey team, like numerous other national teams from Asia, made their debut in an official competition as part of the Winter Asian Games . On January 28, 2011, Kyrgyzstan met in the weaker Premier Division of the Winter Asian Games 2011 on the internationally experienced national team of Thailand , against which it clearly won with 15: 4. Just one day later, the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia winner of the year 2009 and Arab Cup of Ice Hockey winner 2008, the United Arab Emirates , were clearly defeated 14-0. The Kyrgyz also played the following four games successfully, winning the gold medal in the Premier Division .

In 2014 the team took part in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia for the first time. After four wins and one defeat, they finished second in Division 1, the underperforming of the two groups.

In 2019 Kyrgyzstan started at an IIHF World Championship for the first time. The team remained unbeaten in sporting terms and clearly won all five tournament games, which would have meant promotion to Division III. Due to a lack of a player's license, the first four tournament games were subsequently rated with defeats, so that the team took last place and the newly created Division IV was relegated.
