history

Game scene Greece vs. Georgia (2013)

The Greek national ice hockey team first took part in an official tournament in 1992 when they competed at the C2 World Cup in Johannesburg , South Africa , and finished third in their group. In 1993 they failed in qualifying for the C World Championship. After she did not take part in the World Cup in 1994, she reached 9th place at the C2 World Cup in 1995 . In 1996 they failed again in qualification because their two games won were counted as lost due to the use of unauthorized players. In 1998 and 1999 Greece reached the eighth and thus last (1998) and penultimate (1999) place in the D-World Cup, before nine years without participation in the World Cup followed.

After this break, Greece entered the D-World Championship in 2008, where they first came fifth and a year later came fourth. Due to the global economic crisis, Division III World Cup 2010, which was originally supposed to take place in Greece, was relocated to Luxembourg. The Greek association gave financing problems as the reason for the cancellation. Nevertheless, the Greeks finished second in the group with two wins behind newly promoted Ireland. In 2011 the lowest point in Greek ice hockey was reached. The Hellenes suffered high double-digit defeats and finished the Division III World Cup tournament with a goal difference of 7:79 in four games played (and a 5-0 score for Greece due to Mongolia's non-appearance). In the following years they could recover a little, qualified for the Division III World Cup 2013 and finished in 5th place. The IIHF has been enforcing minimum standards for participation in World Championships since 2013. Since none of the ice rinks in Greece has an "Olympic" size, the Greek team is no longer allowed to participate in world championships.
