The Chinese national ice hockey team took 37th place in the IIHF world rankings in August 2017 and plays in Division II at the world championships . The national team is organized by the Chinese Ice Hockey Federation .

history

In 1972 the team took part in an ice hockey world championship for the first time, but the team has not yet won a medal. In 1975 the team decided not to take part in the C-World Cup in Sofia , Bulgaria , and it wasn't until 1978 that they should take part again. As the host, however, the Chinese ice hockey association caused a political uproar there because the country refused entry visas to the South Koreans who were taking part for the first time . The visa dispute led to intense diplomatic tensions between the two countries. As a result, the C-World Cup host China was withdrawn and, as in the previous year, assigned to Spain, which agreed to host it at short notice. In addition, in order to prevent a direct encounter between China and South Korea, which could possibly be fraught with considerable complications, it was decided to let China move up into the B group as C-group fourth and Denmark as C-group third there were four newcomers in the B group, which has now been increased to ten teams. At the 1992 World Cup , a Chinese women's national team took part in a World Cup for the first time.

In addition to the IIHF World Championships, China regularly takes part in the Winter Asian Games , in which it won a medal in the first five editions between 1986 and 2003 (two gold and three bronze). Only in 2007 did the team fail to win a medal.

At the 2018 World Cup , the team achieved 4th place in Division IIA, the best placement in ten years.

As host, China will qualify for the Olympic ice hockey tournament for the first time in 2022 .
