Once again the USSR was the superior world champion. For the Soviet team it was the 17th world and 20th European championship title. Even the admission of professional players since 1976 could not change this superiority. This was because the play-offs of the North American professional leagues were taking place at the same time as the World Cup. The Canadians and Americans, but also the western European teams, especially Sweden and Finland, could only fall back on professionals from those clubs that had already been eliminated in the championship. In addition, these could usually only arrive immediately before the start of the tournament. As a result, these teams were not well-rehearsed, against the state amateurs from the Soviet Union, who mostly played together in the domestic clubs , they usually had no chance.

In 1980, the IIHF awarded the World Cup of Group B to the Grödner Tal (Val Gardena) in Italy under the condition that the venue be roofed. The venue was the Setil ice rink in Ortisei , which was built in 1967 and held up to 4,500 spectators. The actual user of the venue was HC Gröden, founded in 1927 . The roofing of the stadium during the 1980/81 season made it the largest closed ice rink in Central Europe at that time.
