The 22nd ice hockey world championship and 33rd ice hockey European championship took place from February 25 to March 6, 1955 in the Federal Republic of Germany . It was one of the first major sporting events to be held in post-war Germany and was accordingly very popular. The venues were Cologne , Düsseldorf , Krefeld and Dortmund . A total of 14 teams took part in this World Cup, which was a new participation record for the post-war period. This led to five underperforming teams holding a B tournament (called junior tournament), in which a German B team took part as the sixth team out of competition.

In terms of sport, the tournament was shaped by the rivalry between record world champions Canada and last year's sensational world champion USSR . The Canadians took revenge for the sensational 2: 7 defeat of the previous year and won their 16th title. For the dethroned Soviet defending champion, at least the second European title remained.
