Karel Gut (born September 16, 1927 in Uhříněves , † January 6, 2014 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak ice hockey player and coach . As a trainer, he was twice German champion with EV Landshut .

Career

As a player

Karel Gut began ice hockey at LTC Uhříněves and also played football in his youth. During his military service he played for the army sports club ATK Prague . He then worked at Tatra Smíchov until he moved to Spartak Praha Sokolovo in 1953 . With Spartak he won the national championship as a defender in 1954 . In his 300 league games until 1964, he scored 86 times. From 1952 to 1960 he played all World Championships and Olympic Games for Czechoslovakia. He won three bronze medals at world championships, while he finished fourth and 1956 fifth at the Olympic Games in 1952 and 1960. He scored 35 goals in his 114 international matches.

After he ended his playing career, he became a coach at Sparta ČKD Prague . In 1967 he became a coach at the German Bundesliga club EV Landshut . The Niederbayern had signed Gut for three years and in the last of these three seasons he led Landshut to the championship title in 1970. There followed three years as a coach of the Czechoslovak junior national team, before he was in charge of the Czechoslovak national team from 1973 to 1980. During this time, Czechoslovakia won two world championships ( 1976 , 1977 ) and won an Olympic silver medal and four world championship silver. Karel Gut returned to EV Landshut for three years in 1980 and - like his first time - it was the last year in which he was able to bring the championship title to Landshut in 1983. After a few years on the Czech coaching council, he returned to EV Landshut in 1988, first as coach and then as technical director.

Between 1994 and 2004 Karel Gut was President of the Czech Ice Hockey Federation . In 1998 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame as a member .
