The Canada Cup 1976 ( French Coupe Canada 1976 ) was the first edition of the competition of the same name . It was held from September 2 to 15, 1976 in the North American cities of Ottawa , Toronto , Montréal , Québec , Winnipeg and Philadelphia . The tournament was started and organized according to the idea of Alan Eagleson . The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the North American Professional League National Hockey League and the Canadian Ice Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

Six teams took part in the first edition of the competition. Canada won the tournament with two wins in the final series against Czechoslovakia . The best scorer of the tournament was the Russian Viktor Schluktow with five goals and nine points. The Canadian Bobby Orr was voted Most Valuable Player .

The six teams played the placements in the preliminary round in a single round, so that each team played five games. There were two points for a win, and one point each for a draw. The two teams with the highest points in the group of six qualified for the finals. The final was played in the "best-of-three" mode.
