Pekka Rautakallio (born July 25, 1953 in Pori ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach , who worked for the Atlanta Flames and Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League as well as the Phoenix Roadrunners in the World Hockey Association has played. Most recently he was head coach at Ässät Pori between 2014 and February 2016 .
Career
As a player
Pekka Rautakallio began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with Ässät Pori , for which he was active in the SM-sarja from 1970 to 1975 and was Finnish champion for the first time in the 1970/71 season . From 1975 to 1977 the defender played for the Phoenix Roadrunners in the World Hockey Association , before returning to Ässät Pori in the newly founded SM-liiga for two years . On June 5, 1979 he signed a contract with the Atlanta Flames from the National Hockey League as a free agent . After the franchise was relocated to Calgary , Canada a year later , the Finn also played for two seasons for Atlanta's successor team, the Calgary Flames .
For the 1982/83 season Rautakallio signed a contract with HIFK Helsinki from the SM-liiga, with which he won the Finnish championship for the second time in his career in the same season. The left shooter ended his active career at SC Rapperswil-Jona , for which he was on the ice from 1987 to 1989 in the Swiss National League B.
The Pekka-Rautakallio trophy for the best defender of the SM-liiga, which he himself received three times, is named after Rautakallio .
International
For Finland , Rautakallio took part in the world championships in 1972 , 1973 , 1975 , 1977 , 1978 , 1979 and 1983 . He was also in Finland's squad for the Canada Cup in 1976 and 1981 .
As a trainer
After the end of his career, Rautakallio began to work as an ice hockey coach. In the 1990/91 season he supervised the U18 juniors from Kiekko Espoo . Between 1993 and 1998 he was the head coach of SC Rapperswil-Jona and led it from National League B to National League A. Before the following season he was introduced as the new coach of Espoo Blues , but was released at the end of November 1998.
In the seasons 1999/2000 and 2000/01 he was in charge of SC Bern from the National League A. From November 13, 2001 to March 20, 2003 Rautakallio was the full-time trainer of the ZSC Lions .
From the middle of the 2004/05 season , Rautakallio took over from Hannu Virta as head coach at the Espoo Blues , but returned to Switzerland in 2005 and was head coach of HC Ambrì-Piotta until 2007 . His successor at the HCAP was Larry Huras .
In the 2009/10 season he coached their league rivals Ässät Pori before he was signed by Dinamo Riga in April 2011 . In November 2012, Rautakallio was sacked by Dinamo after a series of losses.
Between 2014 and February 2016 he was head coach at Ässät Pori .
