Larry Robert Huras (born July 8, 1955 in Listowel , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who was head coach of the Swiss club Friborg-Gottéron until April 2017 .

Career

As a player

Huras began his career in Elmira in 1971 in a second-rate junior league of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). Between 1972 and 1975 he played for the Kitchener Rangers in the top division of the OHA, the Major Junior A , and its successor, the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . During the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft , Huras was selected in the fifth round in 84th place overall by the New York Rangers . In the following two years he played for various teams in the minor leagues before making his debut for the Rangers in the National Hockey League on February 27, 1977 . In total, he only completed two NHL games before returning to the New Haven Nighthawks .

Further stations in the lower leagues of North America were the Salt Lake Golden Eagles , the Dallas Black Hawks and the Port Huron Flags . In 1980 he left the American continent and moved to the top French division, today's Ligue Magnus , to Grenoble MH 38 . With Grenoble he was French champion in 1981 and 1982.

Between 1983 and 1988 he played for the Gap Hockey Club . From 1988 he went on the ice for Rouen HÉ , with whom he again won the French championship in 1990.

As a trainer

Before the 1991/92 season, Huras was nominated as player-coach in Rouen and filled this position until 1994, with little use in the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons. In 1994 he ended his playing career for good, but remained coach of Rouen HE until the end of the 1995/96 season.

Before the 1996/97 season he was the head coach of HC Ambrì-Piotta , with whom he won the IIHF Continental Cup twice. After the 1999/2000 season he left the club and was in charge of the ZSC Lions in the following years . With the ZSC, he won another Continental Cup in 2001 and became Swiss champion before being relieved of his post on November 6, 2001.

At the Spengler Cup 2001 he was assistant coach of Team Canada , which won the cup competition. Almost a year later, on November 14, 2002, he was signed by HC Lugano . With HC Lugano he achieved another championship title in 2003. On March 10, 2006, he was dismissed from HC Lugano after a series of defeats in the playoffs.

A year later, at the end of the 2006/07 season , he helped HC Ambrì-Piotta to stay up.

In the 2007/08 season he was the head coach of the Stavanger Oilers in the Norwegian GET-ligaen . In the 2008/09 season Larry Huras was head coach of EC Villacher SV . From summer 2009 Larry Huras was the head coach of SC Bern with whom he won the Swiss championship title in 2010. On October 21, 2011 he was removed from office after losing 2-1 to the ZSC Lions . The decisive reason for the dismissal, in addition to the unsatisfactory sporting results recently, is above all the unattractive way of playing at SC Bern. Shortly after his release in Bern, Larry Huras was signed on October 26, 2011 by HC Lugano until 2013/14. This contract was terminated at the beginning of April 2013. In June 2014 he was announced as the new trainer by the reigning German champions ERC Ingolstadt from the DEL . One day after the final defeat against Adler Mannheim in April 2015, he announced that he was moving to the Swedish club MODO Hockey in the Svenska Hockeyligan . After just ten points from the first 15 games of the 2015/16 season, Huras was dismissed in November 2015.

From the end of September 2016 he was the head coach of Friborg-Gottéron . He led the team to the semi-finals of the Champions Hockey League , where they were eliminated in January 2017 by the Swedish club Frölunda HC . In the National League A, Friborg secured relegation under Huras' leadership in the relegation round, after the end of the 2016/17 season the cooperation was ended.
