Rogatien Rosaire "Rogie" Vachon (born September 8, 1945 in Palmarolle , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and coach , who from 1966 to 1982 for the Montréal Canadiens , Los Angeles Kings , Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins in the national hockey League played.
Career
As a junior he played for the Montréal Junior Canadiens in the OHA together with Yvan Cournoyer and Jacques Lemaire . As a senior he played from 1965 with the Quebec Aces in the American Hockey League , where he replaced Ernie Wakely .
He made his NHL debut in the 1966/67 season with the Montreal Canadiens . He often played on the farm team , with the Houston Apollos in the Central Professional Hockey League , but he had 19 appearances in the goal of the Canadiens, which was guarded mostly by Charlie Hodge and Gump Worsley this season .
In the 1967/68 season he won his first Stanley Cup in Montreal . After moving from Hodge, Vachon was on an equal footing with Worsley, 16 years his senior. The two won the Vezina Trophy together . After defending his title in 1969, Worsley suffered a nervous breakdown in the 1969/70 season . Vachon played over 60 games but the team missed the playoffs. With Ken Dryden , the Canadiens had a strong young goalkeeper in the 1971/72 season and Vachon botched his first third of the season with four goals against. He was substituted off and asked for a transfer after the game.
In exchange for Denis DeJordy and three other players, he was given to the Los Angeles Kings in November 1971 . This gave a great boost to his life and career. At the side of Gary Edwards , he developed into one of the leading players in the Kings. Between 1973 and 1977 he was voted Most Valuable Player of the Kings four times. He had a brilliant start to the 1974/75 season . After 17 games he conceded 1.41, the best in 17 years. At the end of the season he was only barely defeated by Bobby Clarke in the election for the Hart Memorial Trophy .
The Canada Cup in 1976 represented a career highlight. Ken Dryden and Bernie Parent were not available and so he was appointed to the squad of the Canadian team with Gerry Cheevers and Glenn Resch . With an outstanding performance, he was used in all games and helped his team win the tournament. He was also named Most Valuable Player .
For the 1978/79 season he moved to the Detroit Red Wings . After two seasons in Detroit, he moved to the Boston Bruins for another two years , after which he ended his active career.
For the 1983/84 season he returned to the Kings as General Manager . While he held this post until 1992, he repeatedly took over the position of coach at short notice. In 1985 he was honored when the Kings blocked his number 30 shirt. Shortly after resigning the position of general manager in 1991, he returned as an advisor to club management.
His son Nicholas Vachon , born in 1972, was also a good ice hockey player, but only made one NHL appearance with the New York Islanders .
In 2016, Vachon was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
