Andy Murray (born March 3, 1951 in Gladstone , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and current coach .

Career

After a little successful career as a player, Andy Murray began his coaching career in 1976 as head coach of the Brandon Travelers from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League . From 1981 to 1984 he was behind the boards at EHC Kloten from National League A and then in the same position for two seasons each at Zürcher SC and EV Zug . In 1988 he worked as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League . After two years with the Flyers, he moved, also as an assistant coach, to the Minnesota North Stars , with whom he reached the Stanley Cup final in 1991 , but was defeated there against the Pittsburgh Penguins .

In 1992 Murray took over as head coach at HC Lugano , but was dismissed in December 1992. From January 1993 he was head coach of the Eisbären Berlin for a few months . Until 1995 he worked two more years as an assistant coach in the NHL at the Winnipeg Jets . In the 1996/97 season he worked a second time for the Eisbären Berlin in the DEL . During the season he accepted an offer from the Canadian Association and was coach of the national team until 1998 . In 1997 and 2003 he became world champion with the team and in 1997 won the Spengler Cup in Davos with the team . He received another engagement in Germany in the 1998/99 season when the Canadian worked as a manager for the Kölner Haie . Following his work in Cologne, he accepted an offer from the Los Angeles Kings and became head coach of an NHL team for the first time. In the first three years in California he always reached the play-offs , but failed there in the first two rounds. In the two years that followed, the Kings did not reach the finals. In the 2005/06 season , the Kings threatened to retire early again, which is why Murray was released shortly before the end of the pre-season and replaced by John Torchetti . From December 2006 through early 2010, Murray was the head coach of the St. Louis Blues . In 2009, Murray was nominated as one of three nominees for the Jack Adams Award for Head Coach of the Year in the NHL. He was also the head coach of the Canadian national team at the 2007 World Cup in Russia and led them to win the title. A total of six Spengler Cups won and three gold medals with the Canadian selection for the Palmarès of Murray count .

On July 26, 2011, Murray was introduced as the head coach of the Western Michigan University ice hockey team , the Western Michigan Broncos , and given a five-year contract.

Andy Murray is the uncle of former NHL and DEL player Marty Murray . His sons Brady Murray and Jordi Murray played in the National League A , among others . His daughter Sarah Murray is the coach of the Korean women's ice hockey team at the 2018 Winter Olympics ; She has been coaching the South Korean women's ice hockey team since the 2014/15 season .
