Lawrence Winslow "Larry" Pleau (born June 29, 1947 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player (center) and coach, who from 1969 to 1979 for the Montréal Canadiens in the National Hockey League and the New England Whalers played in the World Hockey Association . Most recently he was General Manager of the St. Louis Blues .
Career
He spent his junior years with the Montréal Junior Canadiens in the OHA . In 1967/68 he and the American team prepared for the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble . In this tournament he reached sixth place with his team and had six points scorer.
It followed a year with the Jersey Devils in the WHL before he was in the squad of the Montréal Canadiens from the 1969/70 season. Most of the time he played on the farm team with the Montreal Voyageurs in the American Hockey League . After three years in Montreal, he returned to his hometown of Boston. In the newly formed World Hockey Association he played for the New England Whalers . He remained loyal to the team throughout the seven years that the WHA had existed. In the first WHA season he won the WHA championship, the Avco World Trophy, with the Whalers .
After his active career, he was first assistant coach and later head coach of the Hartford Whalers , which now played in the NHL. For many years he held various positions with the Whalers. In addition to the coaching job, he was also general manager and trainer for the farm team, the Binghamton Whalers .
After 17 years with the Whalers, he joined the New York Rangers as Vice President , before accepting the job of General Manager for the St. Louis Blues in 1997. For the 2010/11 season he was replaced by Doug Armstrong .
In 2000 he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
