Paul Howard Holmgren (born December 2, 1955 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a retired American ice hockey striker . From 2006 to 2014 he was General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League .
Career as a player
Holmgren was selected in the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft as the 38th overall player by the Edmonton Oilers . Since the WHA rights to the player were given to the Minnesota Fighting Saints , he never played for Edmonton. During the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft, we selected the Philadelphia Flyers as the 108th player. In the 1975/76 season , Holmgren began his career as a professional ice hockey player with the Fighting Saints, but the team was disbanded on February 27, 1976. Shortly thereafter, he signed with the Flyers and a month later he made his debut in the National Hockey League . In his first season, Holmgren injured in a game for the AHL - farm team by the Flyers, Richmond Robins , heavy. The cornea of one of his eyes was injured and he was immediately taken to a Boston hospital. The winger nearly died due to an allergic reaction to the anesthesia.
Holmgren also spent the next eight years in the Flyers' squad. In Game 2 of the playoff finals of the 1979/80 season , he became the first American-born player to ever manage a hat-trick in an NHL final game. In the following season he was nominated for the first and only time for an NHL All-Star Game . In the middle of the 1983/84 season , Holmgren was given to the Minnesota North Stars .

Career as a trainer and manager
Holmgren went straight to the end of his career as a player in the coaching business and was assistant coach of his ex-team Philadelphia Flyers under Mike Keenan . After Keenan was fired at the end of the 1987/88 season , Holmgren was the first former player to take care of the Flyers. In Holmgren's first season, his team only had to admit defeat to the Montréal Canadiens in six games in the finals of the Prince of Wales Conference . After two disappointing seasons in which the playoffs were missed, the Flyers dismissed him as head coach in the middle of his fourth season. From 1992 to 1996, Holmgren was head coach and interim general manager for the Hartford Whalers for four years .
During the 1995/96 season , Holmgren returned to the Philadelphia Flyers as director of the scouting department. After the 1996/97 season , Holmgren was appointed Sports Director of the Flyers. From the 1998/99 season he assisted the acting General Manager Bobby Clarke until his resignation during the 2006/07 season . Holmgren then received his position, which he continued until June 2014 before he was replaced by Ron Hextall .
