The Prince of Wales Conference was from 1974 to 1993 next to the Campbell Conference one of the two conferences in the highest North American ice hockey league, the NHL . It contained half the teams in the NHL and was divided into two divisions , this division changing over the years.

With the expansion of the league in 1993 and the subsequent reform of the league system, the Conference was replaced by the NHL Eastern Conference . The names of the NHL conferences and divisions were thus adapted to the system of geographic league names prevailing in US sports .

The Conference was named after the Prince of Wales , the title of the eldest living son and thus the crown prince of most of the British monarchs. The winner of the conference, which was played in normal league operations until 1981 , later in play-offs , won the Prince of Wales Trophy and qualified for the Stanley Cup final.
