Campbell Conference
The Clarence Campbell Conference was from 1974 to 1993, alongside the Prince of Wales Conference, one of the two conferences in the highest North American ice hockey league, the NHL . It contained half of the teams in the NHL and was divided into two divisions , the subdivision changed over the years.
With the expansion of the league in 1993 and the subsequent reorganization of the league system, the Conference was replaced by the NHL Western Conference . The names of the NHL conferences and divisions were thus adapted to the system of geographic league names prevailing in US sports .
The Campbell Conference was named after Clarence Campbell , the former President of the National Hockey League (1946–1977). The winner of the conference, which was played in normal league operations until 1981 , later in play-offs , won the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl and qualified for the Stanley Cup final.
