history

The Pacific Division, newly founded in 1993, was very similar to the smythe division that was replaced . Only the new Californian franchise of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim replaced the Winnipeg Jets . Other members were the Calgary Flames , Edmonton Oilers , Los Angeles Kings , San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks .

At the beginning of the 1995/96 season , a seventh team was added with the Colorado Avalanche . The Avalanche was created when the Québec Nordiques moved to Denver . Colorado was able to win the division in the first year and also secured the Stanley Cup at the end of the season , making them the first cup winner to play in the Pacific Division.

Before the 1998/99 season , the NHL rearranged its divisions. The new system now comprised six divisions instead of the previous four. The Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks moved to the new Northwest Division , while the Phoenix Coyotes , created from the Winnipeg Jets' move, and the Dallas Stars , joined the three remaining teams in the Pacific Division.

As part of the restructuring at the beginning of the 2013/14 season , the Northwest Division was dissolved and their teams were divided between the Pacific and Central Divisions. This brought the Vancouver Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames back on, while the Dallas Stars left the division. The Vegas Golden Knights recently joined the Pacific Division as an expansion team .
