Red Box was an active British new wave duo in the 1980s . In 2010, Red Box was re-formed as a band.
history
Red Box was founded in 1982 with originally five members, consisting of Simon Toulson-Clarke (vocals, guitar), Julian Close (saxophone), Martin Nickson (drums), Rob Legge (bass) and Paddy Talbot (keyboards). Shortly after the release of their debut single Chenko in 1983, the band broke up and Simon Toulson-Clarke and Julian Close continued as a duo. The new direction of Red Box was now very strongly influenced by synth-pop and after their second single Saskatchewan (a cover version of a Buffy Sainte-Marie song) they got a record deal with the WEA .
In 1985 her single Lean On me (Ah-Li-Ayo) was released , which made it to number 3 in Great Britain and number 27 in Germany. The music video in which a sign language interpreter translated the lyrics into sign language was unusual .
In 1986 they released their first album, The Circle and the Square, with the help of several guest musicians . Many American radio stations, however, boycotted the single For America , because the presence of American armed forces in Grenada and Nicaragua was criticized. As expected, the song flopped in the US, but it was their second top ten hit in England and other European charts.
In 1990 a second album was released with the title Motive . In 1991, Red Box dissolved. In 2010, Simon Toulson-Clarke founded Red Box again with other musicians and released the album Plenty .
