William Charles "Bill" Barber (born July 11, 1952 in Callander , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League from 1972 to 1984 . Since 2002 he has been Director of Player Personnel at the Tampa Bay Lightning .
Career
As a junior, Bill Barber played with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHA . The Philadelphia Flyers picked him up in the first round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft as the seventh player. After a short time on the farm team with the Richmond Robins in the American Hockey League , he made his breakthrough with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1972/73 season . There he stayed until the 1983/84 season , in which he ended his time as a player due to a knee injury that he sustained in a game in 1982. During his time with the Flyers they could win the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975 .
He was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990 .
Trainer and management career
After his playing days he stayed with the Flyers and in the spring of 1985 he took over the post as head coach of the AHL farm team Hershey Bears for a few months before he was appointed assistant coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer and remained in the position for three years. In 1988 Barber was named Director of Pro Scouting with the Flyers and was responsible for monitoring potential players for the NHL team. After more than seven years, he resigned and returned to the Hershey Bears as head coach in December 1995. After the season, the cooperation between the Flyers and the Bears ended because they had founded a new AHL team with the Philadelphia Phantoms . Barber became the team's head coach and won the Calder Cup in his second year . In July 2000 he left the Phantoms and took over the post as assistant coach with the Flyers again before he was appointed head coach in December. After the season he received the Jack Adams Award for best coach in the NHL, but his tenure ended in the spring of 2002. In the summer of 2002, he finally joined the Tampa Bay Lightning and was appointed Director of Player Personnel. In this function, he assists the General Manager in evaluating players and has an influence on all personal decisions relating to players. In 2004 he won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning.
