Orval Roy Tessier (born June 30, 1933 in Cornwall , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played for the Montréal Canadiens and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League from 1954 to 1961 and the Chicago Black Hawks from 1982 to 1985 trained.

Career

Tessier played with Don Cherry , Don McKenney and Doug Mohns for the Barrie Flyers in the Ontario Hockey Association during his junior years . With the team he won the Memorial Cup in 1953 .

He completed his first two seasons in the senior division for the Montreal Royals in the Quebec Hockey League . In the 1954/55 season he came to the first four missions in the NHL with the Montréal Canadiens . With only six teams in the NHL, places were tight. The Canadiens squad in particular was very staffed during these years.

In the summer of 1955, the Boston Bruins took the opportunity and signed him in the intra-league draft . Initially he was used again in the QHL, this time with the Quebec Aces . For 23 games in the 1955/56 season , he also went on the ice in the NHL. Tessier also scored his first two goals. The following years he played successfully in the lower leagues. His stations were the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League , the Trois-Rivières Lions in the QHL and the Kingston Frontenacs in the Eastern Professional Hockey League .

For the 1960/61 season he returned to the Bruins in the NHL. There, however, he could not build on the performance in the EPHL. This was followed by two years with the Portland Buckaroos in the Western Hockey League . Then the Canadiens bought him back, but there were no further appearances in the NHL. He played another year with the Clinton Comets in the Eastern Hockey League before ending his active career.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Tessier took over as a coach of the junior team of the Cornwall Royals in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League , with which he won the 1972 Memorial Cup. After a detour to the Québec Remparts , he soon returned to Cornwall. His third coaching station was in the QMJHL, the Chicoutimi Saguenéens . After a year with the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League , he took over his first senior team in 1981 with the New Brunswick Hawks from the AHL. He led the Hawks to the Calder Cup and was then brought into the NHL by the Chicago Black Hawks . In his first year he received the Jack Adams Award as the best coach in the league . During his third season in the 1984/85 season , his coaching career in the NHL ended. He returned to the Cornwall Royals after his release, who now played in the OHL.

He later worked as a scout for the Colorado Avalanche . When the team won the Stanley Cup in 2001 , their name was also engraved on the trophy.
