Cornwall is a city in eastern Ontario , Canada and is the seat of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties . It is the easternmost city of Ontario located on the Saint Lawrence River , the Québec-Windsor Corridor and Highway 401 .
Cornwall is about 100 km southeast of Ottawa , Canada's capital, 100 km southwest of Montréal and 450 km northeast of Toronto . It is bordered to the west by South Stormont , to the north by South Dundas , to the east by South Glengarry, southwest by the USA ( New York ). The offshore island of Cornwall Island is part of a reserve of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation , which is otherwise entirely in New York or Québec. The border crossing on the island in 2009 caused tension between the Akwesasne and the Canadian authorities.
The city was named after the English county of Cornwall .
