Alain Guy Chevrier (born April 23, 1961 in Cornwall , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the New Jersey Devils , Winnipeg Jets , Chicago Blackhawks , Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League from 1985 to 1991 .

Career

Chevrier played during his junior career first for the Cornwall Royals in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League . After moving to Miami University in the US state of Ohio , he reduced his focus on ice hockey and wanted to devote himself to his studies. After a short time he went on hold for the university team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association .

In 1984 he finally signed his first professional contract with the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League . After a decent year, the New Jersey Devils signed him as a free agent . With strong performances in his first year, the Devils could afford to give up their regular goalkeeper Glenn Resch and rely on young goalkeepers like Craig Billington and Kirk McLean . The following year, Karl Friesen also joined the team as another back-up goalie, but Chevrier was the clear number one with 58 appearances. He had an excellent start to the 1987/88 season . He won seven of his first ten games in October 1987, becoming the first player in the NHL to receive the newly introduced NHL Player of the Month award.

For the 1988/89 season he moved to the Winnipeg Jets . The next change followed in January. By then he had prepared four goals in his 22 missions for the Jets. His new club were the Chicago Blackhawks . With this team he played a strong playoff series and only failed in the semifinals at the later Stanley Cup winner, the Calgary Flames . He had ousted Darren Pang as a regular goalkeeper and was initially able to prevail against the up-and-coming Ed Belfour . In his second season, the Blackhawks had signed Jacques Cloutier , the Chevrier made dispensable. At the end of the season he moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he came only to three missions.

The 1990/91 season was his last. He played mostly for the San Diego Gulls in the IHL, but also came to three missions for the Detroit Red Wings . His eleven assists in 234 games were of particular statistical value.
