Darren Pang (born February 17, 1964 in Meaford , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and is currently the sports commentator for the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League .
Career
Darren Pang began his career in 1981 in the Canadian Junior League OHL with the Belleville Bulls . During his second season, he moved within the league to the Ottawa 67’s . In 1983/84 he was able to win the Memorial Cup with Ottawa and received several awards, including best goalkeeper in the Memorial Cup finals.
After drawing attention to himself through these successes, he was hired as a free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks . He was allowed to play his first game in the NHL in the 1984/85 season , but completed most of the season in the IHL with the Milwaukee Admirals , the Blackhawks' farm team . After two more years in the IHL with the Saginaw Gears , he was finally able to assert himself in the NHL squad in autumn 1987 and denied the 1987/88 season as number one with the Blackhawks. He finished in third place in the Calder Memorial Trophy poll for the best rookie of the season and was voted into the NHL All-Rookie Team . Also in the 1988/89 season he remained the goalkeeper, but could no longer convince with good performances and was sent to the IHL to the Indianapolis Ice in the fall of 1989 , where he spent the 1989/90 season.
In the fall of 1990 he was invited back to the Chicago Blackhawks' training camp. On September 21, he suffered a serious knee injury in training camp, which ultimately meant the end of his career.
He remained loyal to ice hockey and worked as a coach for several years. From 1996 to 1999 he was assistant coach of the ice hockey team at the University of Notre Dame and from 2002 to 2004 he coached the goalkeepers of the Indianapolis Ice from the CHL .
But he achieved greater popularity through his activities on radio and television. He worked as a reporter and commentator on NHL games for the TV stations ESPN , ABC and NBC . He also worked for NBC at the 2002 Winter Olympics . He is currently part of the Phoenix Coyotes TV team and partly works for the Canadian broadcaster TSN during the playoffs .
Darren Pang's best friend is Steve Yzerman , the longtime team captain of the Detroit Red Wings , whom he has known from his youth. At Yzerman's wedding, Pang was the best man . When Steve Yzerman's jersey with the number 19 was officially blocked by the Red Wings on January 2, 2007 and hung on the ceiling of the Joe Louis Arena , Darren Pang led the ceremony.
