The 1984/85 NHL season was the 68th season in the National Hockey League . 21 teams played 80 games each. The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup after a 4-1 win in the final series against the Philadelphia Flyers . Bobby Clarke retired before the season, but stayed with his Flyers in a new role as general manager. He hired Mike Keenan as a coach who led the team to the finals. Two years younger than Clarke was Guy Lafleur , who had previously played with Jacques Lemaire in a storm series. In the course of the preseason Lemaire had taken over the coaching job in Montreal and now Lafleur complained about too little ice age. At the end of November he ended the season and announced his retirement. While the "old ones" were walking a new star came. Mario Lemieux scored 282 points with the Voisins de Laval last season . Now he was the coveted player in the draft. Pittsburgh's General Manager Eddie Johnston did not miss the opportunity and secured the rights to Lemieux. Mario got a three year contract that brought him $ 600,000. He returned the favor in the first season with 100 points. Jari Kurri is having an excellent season, becoming the third player in NHL history to score over 70 goals. With 19 goals in the playoffs, he set Reggie Leach's record, including 4 hat tricks, also a record.
