Bernard Allan "Bernie" Federko (born May 12, 1956 in Foam Lake , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player . The center played exactly 1000 games in the National Hockey League between 1976 and 1990 , and spent almost his entire career - apart from one last year with the Detroit Red Wings - in the jersey of the St. Louis Blues . With the team, which he also briefly led as team captain and for which his jersey number 24 is blocked , he holds valid franchise records to this day , including most games, assists and scorer points. In addition, he became the 22nd player in NHL history who could reach the milestone of 1000 scorer points , so that he was considered in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002 .
Career
In his junior years, Federko played for the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). Due to its good performance there elected him the St. Louis Blues in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1976 in the first round instead of 7. Likewise, the Edmonton Oilers considered him in the WHA Amateur Draft 1976 in sixth position, but he should not appear for the team or in the league.
The 1976/77 season began Federko in the Central Hockey League on the farm team of the Blues, with the Kansas City Blues . Here he was brought into the NHL after being top scorer in the league after 42 games. Here he played 31 games in his first season, in which he scored three hat tricks. After a moderate second year, he brought it to 95 points in the 1978/79 season and was able to achieve over 80 points for eight consecutive years, reaching the 100-point mark four times. At the end of the 1987/88 season he was the first player in NHL history to look back on 10 consecutive seasons with over 50 templates. At a time when the ice hockey world was mainly looking at the young Wayne Gretzky , Bernie Federko never got the fame he deserved. In 1986 the magazine “Goal” voted him the most overlooked ice hockey player.
As the 22nd player in the NHL, he reached the 1,000-point mark on March 19, 1988 . After the disappointing 1988/89 season , in which he only scored one point per game, he was given to the Detroit Red Wings . In return, Adam Oates came to St. Louis. At the Red Wings he played again under his old coach Jacques Demers . Behind Steve Yzerman , he didn't get as much ice age as he did with the blues. The season in Detroit was also disappointing and Federko ended his active career after exactly 1,000 NHL appearances. His 13 seasons, 927 games, 721 assists and 1073 scorer points represent the respective franchise records of the St. Louis Blues to this day. On March 16, 1991 his jersey with the number 24 was hung under the roof of the stadium in St. Louis; it has not been awarded since then . He stayed true to the blues and still works as a television commentator for the team today. In 2002 he was also honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
