David Anthony Backes (born May 1, 1984 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League since February 2020 . Previously, he spent ten years with the St. Louis Blues , which he led five seasons as captain , and four years with the Boston Bruins . With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics .

Career

David Backes began his career as a hockey player with the Lincoln Stars, for which he was active from 2001 to 2003 in the junior league United States Hockey League . He was then selected in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a total of 62nd player from the St. Louis Blues . The attacker initially played for the Minnesota State University team, Mankato , for three years before making his professional ice hockey debut for their farm team , the Peoria Rivermen from the American Hockey League , towards the end of the 2005/06 season . While the right- shooter still played parallel for St. Louis in the National Hockey League and Peoria in the American Hockey League in the 2006/07 season , the American was exclusively for the St. Louis Blues in the NHL from the 2007/08 season on ice.

Before the start of the 2011–12 NHL season , Backes was named team captain of the Blues.

After ten years in St. Louis, Backes did not receive a new contract from the Blues after the 2015/16 season, so he joined the Boston Bruins as a free agent in July 2016 . He signed a five-year contract there which should bring him an average annual salary of $ 6 million. Before that, however, the US-American was handed over to the Anaheim Ducks in February 2020 together with Axel Andersson and a first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2020 . In return, Ondřej Kaše moved to the Bruins, who also continue to take over a quarter of Backes' salary.

International

Backes participated in the 2007 , 2008 and 2009 World Championships for the United States . He was also a member of Team USA at the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Winter Games , with the team winning the silver medal in 2010. He also represented his home country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
