Marty Wilford (born April 17, 1977 in Cobourg , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who played primarily in the American Hockey League during his playing career . Since May 2018 he has been an assistant coach at the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League .
Career
Wilford began his career in 1994 with the Oshawa Generals in the Canadian Junior League OHL . Already after his first year höchstklassigster in Canada's junior league was back in the NHL Entry Draft in 1995 by the Chicago Blackhawks selected in the sixth round at the 149th place, but remained two more years in the OHL and won in 1997 with his team the championship . The Canadian was also the best-scoring defender and second-best scorer on his team.
In the following season Marty Wilford signed his first professional contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, but initially played four years for their farm teams Columbus Chill in the East Coast Hockey League , Indianapolis Ice and Cleveland Lumberjacks in the IHL and in the AHL for the newly founded Norfolk Admirals . In the 2001/02 season, the Blackhawks transferred Wilford to the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he played on the farm team St. John's Maple Leafs . Towards the end of the season, the defender was again part of a change deal, this time to the Nashville Predators , who first used him with the Milwaukee Admirals . After a few games, the Canadian finally moved to the Hartford Wolf Pack . The following three years Wilford played again with the Norfolk Admirals, where he was the most attacking defender in every season and to this day holds the team record for the most assists by an Admirals player. For the 2005/06 season , the Canadian's contract ran out, so he moved to the Manchester Monarchs as a free agent . A year later, Wilford joined the Iowa Stars .
For the 2007/08 season , the Canadian signed a contract with the Hamburg Freezers from the German Ice Hockey League , where he also played offensively and was fourth-best defender in the league. Since the beginning of the 08/09 season , Wilford has been on the ice for the Iserlohn Roosters , where he signed a two-year contract. In his first season in the Sauerland , he was the Roosters defender with the best points, but could not qualify for the play-offs with them. A year later he formed with Mark Ardelan , with whom he played in the AHL from 2005 to 2007, the Iserlohn's first defender pair. In addition, both were the Roosters' strongest offensive defenders. They were also able to convince in their defensive work, with only four teams conceding fewer goals in the first half of the season. In the further course of the season, the team's performance declined, so that again only eleventh place was achieved. Wilford, on the other hand, became the league's best-scoring defender and set a new club record when he gave at least one assist in ten games in a row. After the end of the season, the Roosters announced the Canadian's departure. In September 2010, the Canadian signed a contract with SHC Fassa from the Italian A1 series .
After the 2010/11 season, Wilford ended his playing career and was appointed assistant coach at the Syracuse Crunch together with Brad Lauer in July 2011 . After the Anaheim Ducks had concluded a multi-year cooperation with the Norfolk Admirals in June 2012 , Wilford continued to work for their AHL farm team as an assistant coach. In the same position, he then worked for the new farm team, the San Diego Gulls , before he was promoted to the new assistant coach of the Anaheim Ducks in May 2018.
