In his rookie year in the OHL, the defender had three goals and 19 assists for a total of 22 points in 63 games. His team, however, missed the playoffs. In the 2009/10 season he was only able to participate in 41 season games due to illness, in which he collected two goals and 21 templates. On July 15, 2011, Gudbranson signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Florida Panthers.
After five seasons in the Panthers' jersey, Gudbranson and a five-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft were given to the Vancouver Canucks , who in return sent Jared McCann and a second-round and four-round vote for the same draft to Florida. The defender spent nearly three seasons at the Canucks. The team remained largely unsuccessful, so that the defender was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2019 in exchange for Tanner Pearson .
