Thierry Champion (born August 31, 1966 in Bagnols-sur-Cèze ) is a former French tennis player .

Life

Champion reached the quarter-finals at the junior tournament of the French Open 1983, defeating Andrei Olchowski and Aaron Krickstein , among others . The following year he was in the quarterfinals of the junior competition of the Australian Open , where he was defeated by Mark Kratzmann . He could not win a tournament on the ATP World Tour , his best result was the individual final in Saint-Vincent in 1988 , which he clearly lost to Kent Carlsson . On the ATP Challenger Tour he celebrated two tournament victories in the course of his career. On August 26, 1991, he reached 44th place, his highest ranking in the ATP world rankings .

His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was the quarter-finals at the French Open and Wimbledon . In Roland Garros he defeated Guy Forget and Karel Nováček , among others , before he clearly lost to the eventual winner Andrés Gómez in three sets . In 1991 he defeated the former tournament winner Pat Cash in the second round at Wimbledon before losing to defending champion Stefan Edberg . In the doubles competition he was twice in the second round of the French Open, in mixed he reached the round of 16 there in 1989. In 1993, with his 6--0, 6-, 0-6 defeat against Sergi Bruguera at the French Open, he was only the fifth player ever to suffer such a drastic defeat in a Grand Slam tournament.

Champion appeared in two individual encounters for the French Davis Cup team in 1992 . In the quarter-finals of the world group, he lost his two singles in four sets against Marc Rosset and Jakob Hlasek . The Switzerland eventually won the match 3: 2nd
