Bagnols-sur-Cèze is a French town with 18,258 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . The city is the capital of the eponymous canton of Bagnols-sur-Cèze and belongs to the Arrondissement of Nîmes .
geography
The city lies on the lower reaches of the Cèze River . Bagnols-sur-Cèze is 15 kilometers northwest of Orange . The neighboring municipalities of Bagnols-sur-Cèze are Saint-Nazaire and Vénéjan in the north, Chusclan and Orsan in the east, Laudun-l'Ardoise in the south-east, Tresques in the south, Sabran in the west and Saint-Gervais in the north-west.
history
The place name is derived from the Latin Balnearius . This means something like "place of baths" and suggests that Bagnols-sur-Cèze was an important bathing resort in the Gallo-Roman era. Already in the 4th century there was a sanctuary at the place of today's church.
The local coat of arms contains the three lilies of the Bourbons , which indicate a long reign of this house. In 1208 the contract for the formation of a municipality was concluded. A little later, in 1223, a market square was built. In the 14th century the city fortifications were strengthened, among other things as protection against the effects of the Tuchin uprising . Subsequently, the place was also affected by the Huguenot Wars and around 1580 Bagnols-sur-Cèze was hit by a plague wave. The silk industry settled in the city in the 17th century. In the 17th century, King Ludwig XIII. the destruction of the castle of Bagnols, but it was rebuilt in the 18th century. In 1891, Bagnols adopted the suffix sur-Cèze .
