Sauveterre is a commune with 2036 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the French region of Occitania .

geography

The municipality is 40 kilometers from the city of Nîmes and 15 kilometers from Orange and Avignon . To the east, the municipality is bounded by the Rhône , which forms the border with the Vaucluse department .

The neighboring communities of Sauveterre are Roquemaure in the north, Avignon (Vaucluse department) in the east, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in the south and Pujaut in the west.

history

Before the French Revolution, Sauveterre was just a hamlet of forty to fifty houses. The residents of the village were unprotected from attackers. The contract, which was signed on December 8, 1442 between Sauveterre and Roquemaure , protected the residents from attackers, but also deprived them of many freedoms. In 1790 Sauveterre failed when trying to become an independent municipality. The attempt was made at the initiative of the priest with the support of the Charterhouse in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon , which owned land in the area. The municipality of Roquemaure was against Sauveterre's independence. 60 years later, the community became independent. In 1857 there were 888 residents and two municipal schools in Sauveterre.
